Spearmint is a species of mint, Mentha spicata, native to Europe and southern temperate Asia. It is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows up to 30-100 cm tall with variably hairless to hairy stems and foliage. The leaves are 5-9 cm long and 1.5-3 cm broad with a serrated margin. Spearmint is grown for its leaves and essential oil, which is used as a flavoring in foods and cosmetics. It contains chemicals that reduce swelling and affect hormone levels in the body, including testosterone. Some chemicals might also harm cancer cells and kill bacteria.
